As of April 30, 2013, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) no longer issues the self-completed paper Form I-94 card at the airport or via aircraft carrier as had been the procedure for many years. Foreign travelers' may recall handwriting their names, country of citizenship, and date of birth on a small white perforated card while en-route to the U.S. It had fascinated many that this small white handwritten card served as ones primary lawful status document, and in many cases, employment authorization document, which often contained illegible date stamps and/or errors.
Under the new automated process, the CBP will now automatically gather the foreign travelers’ information from the electronic travel records provided by the airline carrier. A CBP officer will also stamp a foreign traveler’s passport with an admission stamp listing the date of admission, class of admission and the date that the traveler is admitted until. Foreign nationals will now need to retrieve their I-94 arrival/departure record by printing it out from the CBP Website at www.cbp.gov/I94. The I-94 record is still as critical of a document as it has been historically, as it is needed to evidence lawful status in the U.S., and in many cases, employment authorization. It is also needed for various immigration benefits/applications, I-9 verification, as well as when applying for a social security card or a driver's license. It should be noted that the paper I-94 card is still issued when entering the U.S. via land border port of entries. The information required to obtain the electronic I-94 card is illustrated below.
