E-Verify was authorized by the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRIRA). E-Verify is a Web-based, electronic program that compares information from the Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification Form) to government records to confirm that an employee is authorized to work in the United States. After hire, information from the completed Form I-9 is transmitted through the E-Verify system to the Social Security Administration and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to determine whether the information matches government records. E-Verify is administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, USCIS, Verification Division, and the Social Security Administration.
